Intwasa Arts Festival koBulawayo is Zimbabwe’s second city’s most significant cultural event, held annually each September across four days. The name “Intwasa” means “spring” in Ndebele, and the festival has been running since 2005, growing from a modest local gathering into a recognised platform for Zimbabwean and southern African arts.

What Intwasa offers

The festival programme covers theatre, spoken word, music, traditional dance, poetry, literature and community workshops. A core aim is amplifying Zimbabwean creative voices, particularly those working in Ndebele language and Matabeleland traditions that receive less national visibility than their Shona counterparts. That commitment gives Intwasa a distinctly local character that sets it apart from Harare’s more internationally focused HIFA.

Venues are spread across Bulawayo, including the Bulawayo Theatre, the National Gallery of Zimbabwe’s Bulawayo branch and various outdoor locations. The schedule mixes professional productions with community performances, emerging artist showcases and youth workshops — making the festival genuinely participatory rather than purely spectator-focused.

Street performance and informal evening sessions create a lively atmosphere around the city centre on festival nights. Bulawayo is a compact city and the main festival sites are all walkable or a short taxi ride from one another.

Tickets and festival passes are available through the Intwasa website (intwasa.co.zw) and at venue box offices. Some workshops and community events are free to attend. The festival typically runs from Wednesday through Saturday, with the main programme peaking over the weekend.

September sits in Zimbabwe’s dry, warm spring — days reach around 26-28°C and evenings are comfortable, so outdoor events are genuinely pleasant. Bulawayo has a good range of hotels and guesthouses; accommodation is less pressured than in Harare or Victoria Falls, but booking ahead for the festival weekend is still advisable.

Bulawayo makes a natural base for visits to Matobo Hills, where Zimbabwe’s most important rock art sites are located. Combining Intwasa with a day trip to Matobo gives a rounded picture of Matabeleland’s cultural heritage.
