Shoko Festival

Shoko Festival is Harare’s urban culture event, running each September across three days and nights. Founded in 2012, Shoko (the Shona word for “word” or “speech”) grew out of the spoken word and hip-hop communities in Harare and has expanded into a multi-stage event covering rap, poetry, comedy, visual art, digital activism and panel discussions. It occupies a distinct space in Zimbabwe’s cultural calendar — younger, louder and more politically engaged than the multi-arts festivals, and deliberately rooted in street culture and youth expression.

What to expect

The festival programme typically combines headliner concerts with slam poetry competitions, open mic sessions, comedy showcases and forums on topics like freedom of expression, digital rights and creative entrepreneurship. International artists from across Africa and beyond perform alongside Zimbabwean acts, giving the event a genuinely pan-African feel. Past editions have featured artists from South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and the UK.

Venues shift year to year but have included the Book Cafe (a long-standing Harare cultural institution), Mannenberg Jazz Club and outdoor spaces in the city centre. The atmosphere is relaxed and participatory — Shoko has always encouraged audience interaction rather than passive spectatorship.

Practical information

Tickets are available through the Shoko website (shokofestival.co.zw) and at the venue doors. Some daytime events and panel discussions are free. The full programme is typically announced four to six weeks before the festival, so follow the official social channels for lineup updates.

The festival runs over a Thursday-to-Saturday window, with the biggest acts performing on Friday and Saturday nights. Harare’s September weather is warm and dry (around 27°C during the day), making the outdoor elements of the festival comfortable. Evenings cool down to around 14-16°C — a light jacket is worth bringing for late-night sets.

Harare has a growing range of restaurants and bars within walking distance of the main festival venues. If you are combining Shoko with a longer Zimbabwe trip, note that it runs on the same weekend as the Intwasa Arts Festival in Bulawayo, making a double festival trip possible with a 4-5 hour drive or a domestic flight between cities.
