The Victoria Falls Marathon is held each July along the Zambezi River, taking runners through some of the most scenic terrain in southern Africa. The course is World Athletics-certified and covers the full 42.2 km marathon distance, with half marathon and 5 km fun run options available for those who want the atmosphere without the full distance. The event draws runners from across Zimbabwe, Zambia, South Africa and internationally, making it one of the region’s better-regarded road running events.
The course and experience
The full marathon and half marathon routes follow the Zambezi River upstream from Victoria Falls town, passing through areas where elephant and other wildlife are occasionally spotted near the road. The Falls themselves are visible at various points along the course, and the spray creates a cool microclimate near the start and finish areas. The route is paved and follows relatively flat terrain alongside the river, which makes it accessible for intermediate runners despite the distance.
July is arguably the best month to run at Victoria Falls. The dry season means clear skies and no rain, morning temperatures start around 10-12°C (comfortable for running), and the Falls are at close to peak water volume following the April-May rains — the spray and roar are at their most dramatic. By midday the temperature climbs to 25-28°C, so faster runners finishing the full marathon benefit from the cool mornings.
Registration and practical details
Entry is through the official website (vicfallsmarathon.com), where current registration fees and race-day information are posted. The event typically sells out in advance, so register early if you are planning your trip around it. Race-day start times vary by distance, with the full marathon beginning earliest to allow runners to finish before the heat peaks.
Accommodation in Victoria Falls books quickly in July, which is peak tourist season for the whole region. Plan your stay well ahead. After the race, Victoria Falls itself is worth at least two further days — bungee jumping, white-water rafting and sunset cruises on the Zambezi are all excellent. Our Zimbabwe in July guide covers what to expect from the weather and wildlife during your visit.
