Harare Airport Transfer: Taxis, Shuttles & Private Transfers

Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport (HRE) handles all international and most domestic arrivals into Zimbabwe’s capital. The airport is a compact, single-terminal facility 15 km south-east of the city centre. Getting into Harare is straightforward; the main decision is whether you want convenience or cost savings.

Distance and Journey Time

The airport sits just off the Harare–Masvingo road (A4). In normal traffic the run into the central business district takes about 20–30 minutes. Rush hour - roughly 07:00–09:00 and 16:30–18:30 on weekdays - can push that to 45 minutes, particularly through the Msasa and Eastlea intersections. Most hotel zones (Avondale, Belgravia, Borrowdale) add another 10–15 minutes beyond the CBD.

Option 1 - Pre-Booked Private Transfer

A dedicated car waiting for you at arrivals is the most stress-free option, especially after a long-haul flight. Your driver holds a name board, helps with luggage, and knows exactly where your hotel is.

What to expect:

• Sedan or minivan depending on party size
• Fixed price agreed before travel - no negotiation on arrival
• Air-conditioned vehicle with Wi-Fi in some cases
• Meet-and-greet inside the terminal

Book through an international transfer platform before you fly so the price is locked in USD. We recommend booking at least 24 hours ahead - last-minute availability is unreliable.

Option 2 - Ride-Hailing (Uber / Hwindi)

Both Uber and Hwindi (Zimbabwe’s homegrown ride-hailing app) operate from Harare Airport. You request a car through the app once you clear customs and collect luggage.

Uber: Available at HRE. Pick-up is from the designated ride-share zone outside arrivals. Fares from the airport to the CBD run approximately USD 10–18; to Borrowdale expect USD 15–22. Prices spike during morning peak hours.

Hwindi: The local alternative. Fares are comparable to Uber and driver availability in the airport zone is generally good. Download the app before arriving - it requires a Zimbabwean mobile number to register, though some international SIMs work during setup.

Tip: Have mobile data ready. If your international roaming is not set up, pick up a local SIM at the airport - Econet Wireless and NetOne have counters in the arrivals hall. Alternatively, grab an eSIM before you fly with Zimbabwe eSIM from Airalo.

Option 3 - Airport Taxis (Negotiated Rate)

A line of taxis waits outside arrivals. These are not metered - the driver quotes a price and you negotiate. Some drivers start high (USD 40–50) expecting to haggle down.

Reasonable rates to aim for (2026):

• Airport to CBD: USD 15–20
• Airport to Avondale / Belgravia: USD 20–25
• Airport to Borrowdale: USD 25–30
• Airport to Eastgate / Msasa (closest zones): USD 12–18

Always confirm:

• The currency (USD, not RTGS)
• That the price is for the whole vehicle, not per person
• Whether luggage is included

Ask at the airport information desk if you want a recommended company - staff can point you to registered operators.

Option 4 - Shared Shuttle

Several guesthouses and budget-friendly operators run shared shuttles between the airport and popular accommodation areas. These vehicles collect passengers heading in the same direction and depart when roughly full or on a fixed schedule.

Cost: USD 2–8 per person depending on operator and zone.

Downside: Wait times can be 30–60 minutes if you arrive on a quiet flight. Not practical if you are checking into a hotel on a tight schedule.

Ask at the arrivals information desk or your accommodation in advance - many mid-range guesthouses arrange shared shuttles for guests at no extra cost.

Option 5 - ZUPCO Bus

Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) runs infrequent public buses linking the airport to the city. Fares are the cheapest available (under USD 1–2) but schedules are inconsistent, buses do not run late at night, and luggage handling is awkward.

This is an option for budget travellers with light luggage arriving during daylight hours on a regular weekday. It is not suitable after dark or if you have large bags.

Night Arrivals

Several international flights arrive late or depart early morning. At night, taxi drivers are available but the queue may be shorter. Stick to pre-booked private transfers for the most reliable after-dark option. Uber availability drops after midnight but is still reasonable. Avoid walking beyond the terminal car park after dark.

Car Hire at Harare Airport

If you plan to self-drive during your Zimbabwe trip, several rental counters operate from the terminal: Avis, Europcar, and a number of local operators. Collecting a car on arrival keeps your schedule flexible - useful if you are heading straight to Harare or onward to Great Zimbabwe the following morning.

Note: Zimbabwe drives on the left. An International Driving Permit alongside your home licence is strongly recommended. Road conditions outside major highways vary - check locally before driving rural routes.

Arriving - Practical Tips

• Currency: Change a small amount (USD 20–50) at the airport bureau de change for taxis and tips. Card payments are not universal at street-level transport.
• SIM card: Econet and NetOne desks are in arrivals. A local SIM with data costs around USD 3–5 and is useful for Uber/Hwindi and maps.
• Luggage trolleys: Available free of charge in the arrivals hall.
• Tourist information: The Zimbabwe Tourism Authority desk in arrivals can advise on registered transport operators.

Getting to Other Parts of Zimbabwe

If you are not staying in Harare long, onward connections are available:

• Victoria Falls: Daily flights with Fastjet and Zimbabwe Airlink from HRE to VFA (1 hour). Road distance is about 880 km - a full day’s drive or overnight bus.
• Bulawayo: Fastjet operates the Harare–Bulawayo route. The Joshua Nkomo International Airport serves Bulawayo.
• Masvingo / Great Zimbabwe: Private transfer or bus south on the A4 (4–5 hours).
